Cabrini High School has been promoting and nurturing excellence in athletics for more than 60 years. The Cabrini Hall of Fame is a way to recognize and honor the athletes, teams, coaches, and individuals who have significantly contributed to the school's athletic program. The Hall of Fame also acknowledges the noteworthy careers of alumni athletes, coaches and other sports-related professionals, thus preserving their accomplishments for future generations of proud Monarchs.  


The Alumni Association is pleased to announce this year's Hall of Fame inductees, which include Mick McCabe '67, Debbie Norman '76, Tom Zwolan '78,  Mario Savone '98, the '94 & '95 State Championship Hockey Teams, and  Jim Dalla Vecchia.


Our inductees and the 2024 Summa Honore recipient, Eileen Newell '94, will be honored on Hall of Fame Day, Thursday, June 13. The celebration will include a morning  golf outing at Lakes of Taylor and an evening banquet at Crystal Gardens Banquet Center in Southgate.


Mick McCabe '67

  • Lettered in Football, Basketball, and Track 
  • Wrote his first sports column for the school newspaper, the Cabrin 
  • Illustrious 50-plus year career as a sports writer with the Detroit Free Press   
  • Twice named Michigan Sports Writer of the Year
  • Member of Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame,  Michigan Sports Hall of Fame,  Detroit Catholic League Hall of Fame  Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame and Allen Park Sports Hall of Fame.
  • Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan's "McCabe Miss Basketball Award" named to honor his contributions to the sport 




  Debbie Norman '76

  • Standout athlete in basketball, volleyball, and softball 
  • Named to 1975 All-State Basketball team
  • 1976 Cabrini Female Athlete of the year 
  • Attended University of South Florida on full athletic scholarship for basketball 
  • Recognized in 2012 as one of Detroit Catholic League's all-time top female athletes
  • Winning Cabrini High School softball coach
  • Member of Allen Park Sports Hall of Fame, Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and Catholic League Hall of Fame




Tom Zwolan '78

  • 1978 Cabrini Male Athlete of the Year
  • Earned ten varsity letters
  • Basketball team captain his senior year
  • Football and baseball: All-League, All-Area, and All-Catholic
  • Baseball: All-State
  • Attended Purdue University on full athletic scholarship for baseball
  • Four year starter and four time varsity letters





Mario Savone  '98


  • Football, basketball, and baseball athlete
  • Baseball: All-State
  • Football: All-League, All-Catholic and All-State
  • 1998 Cabrini Male Athlete of the Year
  • Attended Grand Valley State University on a football scholarship

Hockey Teams 

1994

  • Ranked #1 in the State throughout season in Class B-C-D
  • 22-3-2 record
  • Outscored 5 playoff opponents by an average of 5 goals per game
  • Won against Marysville  7-2 for the championship
  • Ray Aho, Mike Weinberger, Eric Hartman, Don Faris and Ben Kidd were named to All-State team


 



1995

  • Came back from some tough losses during the season to once again take the State Championship
  • Steve Karagatsoulis, Pete Niphoratos, Brian Alent, and Tom Stanek were named to All-State team





Jim Dalla Vecchia


  • Managed hockey program for 30 years
  • Recipient of numerous hockey honors throughout the state of  Michigan during eighties and nineties
  • Served the Cabrini community in numerous capacities after retirement
  • Inducted into the Allen Park Sports Hall of Fame in 1995





The Cabrini Summa Honore Award recognizes an individual who embodies the spirit and values of a Monarch. This is Cabrini’s highest honor, bestowed on a person who has distinguished themselves professionally, brought honor to Cabrini, and made a significant contribution of time and/or philanthropy to their communities and our schools. Humility, hard work, leadership, and commitment to faith, family, and service are the hallmark of a true Monarch. With great pride, we honor this inspiring individual with the Summa Honore Award.

  • Served on Cabrini Parish Council, and Parish Festival Audit Committee
  • Youth ministry volunteer/  CYO Basketball and Girls Varsity Soccer coach for many years
  • Volunteer at Corporeal Works of Mercy Center
